Verizon's June 2026 quarter was the best evidence yet that the turnaround is working, and the clearest evidence of what it costs. Total operating revenue was $34,253 million, down 0.7%1. Service revenue rose to $29,229 million from $28,249 million, while wireless equipment revenue fell 19.7% to $5,024 million2.

The customer numbers turned. Verizon added 184 thousand postpaid phones against a loss of 9 thousand a year earlier3. Postpaid phone churn fell to 0.92% from 0.97%4. Broadband net additions were 348 thousand, including 155 thousand fibre5. The price of that was visible too: postpaid ARPA fell 1.4% to $168.356, and the upgrade rate dropped to 2.6% from 3.6% as subsidies were cut7.

The margin set a record. Adjusted EBITDA rose 7.2% to $13,723 million, and the margin reached 40.1%, "the highest the company ever reported"8. Operating cash flow rose to $10,435 million and free cash flow to $6,426 million from $5,167 million9, up 24.4%10. Buybacks were $1.0 billion in the quarter11.

Reported earnings went the other way. Net income attributable to Verizon fell 23.3% to $3,835 million and diluted EPS to $0.92 from $1.1812, after "$1.8 billion in pre-tax special items" including the $746 million loss on the BT transaction13. Interest expense rose 21.1% to $1,985 million1415. Adjusted EPS was $1.30 against $1.2216.

The segments told the same story. Consumer revenue fell to $26,242 million from $26,648 million while its operating income rose to $8,032 million from $7,643 million, and its segment EBITDA margin reached 45.0%17. Business revenue rose to $7,155 million from a restated $6,973 million, with operating income of $991 million against $724 million18. Net unsecured debt was $128,682 million, 2.5 times adjusted EBITDA19.

Guidance was raised again, to adjusted EPS of $4.99 to $5.0420. The next report is due on 26 October 202621. The figure to read first is ARPA: down more than 2% year on year in that quarter would mean the volume gains cost more price than the churn savings are worth.
