✦ AI Infrastructure: A Claim Without a NumberThin moat
Verizon (VZ) — the future bets
Verizon's chief executive says AI infrastructure revenue is reshaping the company's growth, but no figure for it has been disclosed.
Verizon's newest story is artificial intelligence. In the June 2026 release the chief executive said: "with the emergence of AI infrastructure revenue, we are fundamentally reshaping Verizon's growth trajectory"1. The releases give no figure for that revenue, and neither the 10-K nor the 10-Q breaks it out.
The 10-K treats AI as a competitive risk as much as an opportunity: "The rapid evolution and increasing use of AI technologies also contribute to increasing competition"2. The businesses that would carry AI infrastructure revenue, fibre routes to data centres and network services for large customers, would sit mostly in the Business segment.
There, the recent numbers are mixed. Business segment revenue was $7,155 million in the June 2026 quarter against a restated $6,973 million, up 2.6%34, and segment operating income rose 36.9% to $991 million5. But Enterprise and Public Sector revenue fell 10.2% from 2023 to 202567, and part of the quarter's improvement came from moving the international business out.
A claim without a number is a promise. It may prove right; fibre capacity is exactly what data centres buy. It is not yet evidence.
The chief executive framed the quarter around the broader shift: "Our core connectivity business is gaining momentum, and with the emergence of AI infrastructure revenue, we are fundamentally reshaping Verizon's growth trajectory"8. The phrase is a forecast of a revenue stream, not a report of one, and the same release gives figures for everything else.
The first test is disclosure. If Verizon does not report an AI-related revenue figure by the end of 2027, or if Business segment revenue growth stays below 3%, the AI story will not yet have shown up where it would have to.
No AI revenue disclosed; Business revenue +2.6% in Q2 2026.
Where AI infrastructure revenue would have to show; below 3% through 2027 would mean the story has not arrived.
