⚠ Spending Below DepreciationModerate threat
Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat
Verizon's 2025 capital spending was $1.3 billion below its depreciation, and the 2026 budget must now pay for fibre too.
A network that is only maintained, not grown, spends about what it depreciates. Verizon now spends less. Capital expenditure was $17,011 million in 20251 and depreciation and amortisation $18,349 million2, a gap of about $1.3 billion3. In 2022, at the height of the C-Band build, capex was $23,087 million4.
A single year below depreciation means little; the build had front-loaded the spending, and depreciation lags it. But the 2026 guide of "$16.0 billion to $16.5 billion"5 has to cover at least 2.0 million fibre passings as well, and depreciation will rise with the Frontier assets, which included $16,698 million of property, plant and equipment6.
The risk is slow and invisible for years. A carrier's reputation rests on its network, and a network run below its depreciation for long enough will start to show it in dropped calls and slower speeds before it shows up in the accounts.
The first half of 2026 continued the pattern. Capital expenditure was $8,210 million against $7,953 million a year earlier7, on track for the $16.0 billion to $16.5 billion guide, while depreciation now includes Frontier's network. Free cash flow for the half was $10,209 million8, and a good part of the rise came from spending that stayed flat while the network grew.
Three straight years of capex under depreciation, 2025 to 2027, would mean part of the free cash flow now paid to shareholders is the network itself.
