✦ More Spectrum: AWS-3 and UScellularNarrow moat
Verizon (VZ) — the future bets
Verizon spent about $4.2 billion on airwaves in June 2026 alone, outside the capital budget it promised to cut.
Verizon's plan for future capacity is the same as its past one: buy more spectrum. On 1 June 2026 it closed the purchase of spectrum licences from UScellular for $1.0 billion1. The same month, in the FCC's Auction 113, Verizon "was the winning bidder on 82 spectrum licenses valued at approximately $ 3.2 billion" and in July "made additional payments totaling approximately $ 3.1 billion"2.
Together that is about $4.2 billion of new airwaves3 in the year the company said it would cut capital spending to $16.0 billion to $16.5 billion4. Spectrum is not capital expenditure in the accounts, so the capex guide does not include it.
The logic is capacity. Fixed wireless, argued on Fixed Wireless: Selling the Spare Capacity, fills the network, and more phones and more data per phone fill it faster. Buying airwaves is cheaper than building more towers, up to a point.
The cost is the return. Licences rose to $158,159 million by June 20265, and every purchase adds to the capital base argued on The Return Fell to the Cost of Capital without adding revenue on day one.
Spectrum purchases sit outside the capital budget but not outside the balance sheet. The June 2026 licence balance of $158,159 million6 rose from $157,039 million at the end of 20257, and the AWS-3 licences, paid for in July, will add about $3.2 billion more once issued8.
These purchases are small next to C-Band. The test is whether they stay small: if spectrum purchases exceed $5 billion in any year before 2028, Verizon will be refilling its moat faster than its revenue can pay for it.
UScellular $1.0bn and AWS-3 $3.2bn in June 2026.
How fast the licence base grows; purchases above $5bn a year before 2028 would mean the moat is refilled faster than revenue pays.
