⚠ Adjusted Up, Reported DownModerate threat
Verizon (VZ) — threat to the moat
In the quarter Verizon set a record adjusted margin, reported net income fell 23% on $1.8 billion of special items.
The June 2026 quarter shows how far apart Verizon's two sets of numbers can drift. Adjusted EBITDA rose 7.2%1. Net income attributable to Verizon fell 23.3% to $3,835 million2, and diluted EPS fell to $0.92 from $1.183. Operating income fell 12.2% to $7,179 million45.
The difference is special items: "$1.8 billion in pre-tax special items"6, including a "$746 million loss on disposition of business" for the international wireline unit going into the BT joint venture, "asset rationalization charges of $258 million" and "severance charges of $397 million"7. Higher interest on the Frontier debt did the rest.
Adjusted figures are useful for seeing the running business. They are less useful when the adjustments recur, as severance has for three years, argued on Severance Three Years Running.
The first half confirmed the pattern. Net income attributable to Verizon was $8,880 million against $9,882 million a year earlier, and diluted EPS $2.12 against $2.348, while operating cash flow rose to $18,419 million from $16,757 million9. Cash and adjusted figures rose; reported profit fell.
If reported net income for 2026 falls below 2025's $17,174 million10 while adjusted EPS rises to the guided $4.99 to $5.0411, the gap between the company's story and its accounts will have widened for a second year.
