T-Mobile: The Rival With More AccountsNarrow moat
Verizon (VZ) — moat facet
T-Mobile passed Verizon on postpaid accounts in 2026 by adding households, while Verizon kept a 10% price premium by adding lines to fewer homes.
The ordinary rival has overtaken Verizon on the measure Verizon itself leads with. T-Mobile reported "Total postpaid accounts, end of period" of 34,700 thousand at 30 June 20261, against Verizon's 34,237 thousand2, a lead of 463 thousand3. A year earlier T-Mobile had 31,502 thousand4, so its accounts grew about 10.2% while Verizon's fell 1.2%5.
The two carriers are winning different things. T-Mobile reported "Postpaid net account additions of 277 thousand" in the quarter6, and service revenues of $19.0 billion growing 9%7. Verizon added 184 thousand postpaid phones8 and lost accounts. T-Mobile is adding households; Verizon is adding lines to the households it has.
Verizon still charges more. Its postpaid ARPA was $168.35 in the quarter9 against T-Mobile's $152.9110, about 10.1% higher11. For years that premium was the reward for the network that Verizon marketed as the best. A premium that holds while accounts are lost is a premium being paid by fewer customers.
Account churn is close. T-Mobile's postpaid account churn was 0.99%12, and Verizon's postpaid phone churn 0.92%13; the two measures differ, so the comparison is only a rough one.
T-Mobile no longer headlines postpaid phone net additions, reporting accounts instead14, which makes a phone-for-phone comparison with Verizon harder. On the measures both report, the direction is clear: T-Mobile's accounts grew by about 3.2 million in a year1516, while Verizon's fell by 409 thousand1718.
This is a head-on contest for the same family with the same product, and it is the one that sets Verizon's price. The 10-K names T-Mobile among "other national wireless service providers"19. A T-Mobile lead above one million accounts, with Verizon's ARPA premium under 5%, would mean Verizon was losing both the customers and the price that paid for them.
T-Mobile accounts +10.2% in a year; Verizon's -1.2%.
The price the network premium still earns; below 5% while T-Mobile's account lead grows would mean both are slipping.
