$58 Billion Contracted, Undisclosed by CustomerNarrow moat
Verizon (VZ) — moat facet
Verizon has $55 billion of contracted revenue due mostly within three years, but it does not say who stands behind it.
Revenue concentration and backlog concentration can disagree, and for Verizon only the first is disclosed. At the end of 2025, "the aggregate amount of the transaction price related to unsatisfied performance obligations was $ 58.1 billion", of which the company expects "to recognize substantially all of the revenue from origination over the next thirty-six months"1. At 30 June 2026 it was $55.2 billion2, down 5.0% in six months3.
The backlog is short because Verizon's contracts are short. Most phone plans run month to month once the device is paid off, and the contracted element is largely service bundled with instalment plans and business contracts. There is one long tail: certain Business wireline contracts with minimum fees run "ending in September 2053" with aggregate minimum payments of $1.3 billion4.
What the filings do not show is who stands behind the $58.1 billion. The 10-K says no customer exceeds 10% of revenue5, but gives no split of the backlog by customer or by segment. The long-term cable MVNO agreement6, for example, may carry commitments that sit in this number, and a reader cannot tell.
For a company with 147 million retail connections the backlog is probably diversified. Probably is not disclosed.
The disclosure itself is careful about its limits: remaining performance obligation estimates "are subject to change and are affected by several factors, including terminations and changes in the timing and scope of contracts"7. For a business of Verizon's size, $58.1 billion is about five months of revenue8, a short backlog by any standard.
A falling backlog is the signal to watch. Remaining performance obligations under $50 billion while connections grow would mean shorter commitments and thinner switching costs.
Remaining performance obligations $55.2bn at June 2026, from $58.1bn.
How much future revenue is contracted; below $50bn with connections growing would mean shorter commitments and thinner lock-in.
