Caplyta and the Price of Intra-CellularNarrow moat
Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — moat facet
J&J paid about ten times current sales for Caplyta, and the drug is growing 71% a year.
Intra-Cellular Therapies was the largest purchase of 2025, and it shows J&J paying up to fill a gap in its medicines business. J&J paid $132.00 per share in an all-cash merger, total consideration of $14.5 billion, completed on 2 April 20251. To fund it J&J issued senior unsecured notes of approximately $9.2 billion2.
Caplyta, the main product, sold $700 million in the nine months of 2025 under J&J3. It is growing fast: $361 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $211 million a year earlier, up 70.9%4. At the latest quarterly rate the drug sells roughly $1.4 billion a year5, which makes the price about ten times current sales6.
The label keeps widening. The 2025 regulatory table lists Caplyta as adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder7, and in the second quarter of 2026 the FDA approved it for the prevention of relapse in schizophrenia8. The acquisition also brought two in-process research assets, one in unapproved lumateperone indications and one for psychosis and agitation in Alzheimer's disease9.
The purchase fits the replacement machine. Neuroscience had been flat for two years before it; Caplyta added 0.9 points of operational growth to J&J's Innovative Medicine segment in the first half of 202610.
The purchase also moved J&J's balance sheet. Long-lived assets in the United States rose by $18,722 million in 20251112, largely because of Intra-Cellular, and net debt rose from $12.1 billion to $27.8 billion13. For J&J, Caplyta is as much a financing decision as a scientific one.
Its contribution to growth is now fading into the base. Caplyta added about 1.2 points to Innovative Medicine operational growth in 202514 and about 0.9 points in the first half of 202615; from the second quarter of 2026 it is measured against a full quarter of prior-year sales.
Caplyta is a well-chosen product bought at a price that requires years of growth. The number that settles it is Caplyta's annual sales in 2027: above $2 billion would make the deal look reasonable, below $1.5 billion would make it look like a costly way to buy a growth rate.
Sales grew 70.9% in the latest quarter and the label widened twice.
Growth on a $14.5 billion purchase; annual sales above $2 billion by 2027 would justify the price.
