⚠ Buybacks Slowed to $219 MillionLow threat

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) — threat to the moat

J&J repurchased $4.0 billion of stock in the first quarter of 2026 and $219 million in the second.

The pace of repurchases fell away in the second quarter of 2026. J&J bought back $4,253 million of stock in the first half, but only $219 million in the second quarter1.

Share repurchases ($M)5,05420232,40720245,95320254,034Q1 2026219Q2 2026J&J Form 10-K FY2025; Form 10-Q Q2 2026
A sharp stop after a large first quarter.

The timing coincides with rising claims on cash. The talc resolution announced in July calls for a $5.5 billion commitment with the first payment of no more than $3 billion in 20272, and the Firefly and Sail deals added about $1.8 billion of initial payments345.

With buybacks slowing, the diluted share count rose to 2,440.1 million in the quarter from 2,419.1 million a year earlier6.

The cash was not short. J&J held about $20.8 billion of cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities at the end of June 20267. The slowdown is a choice about priorities rather than a sign of strain, and the company lists share repurchases last among its capital allocation priorities, after research, dividends and acquisitions8.

The pattern resembles 2024, when repurchases fell to $2,407 million9, the year J&J bought Shockwave for $12.6 billion10. In years of large purchases, buybacks give way first; the dividend never does.

Even so, the first half's $4,253 million11 was already about 71% of the full-year 2025 total of $5,953 million1213, so 2026 buybacks may still come close to last year's.

Second-half repurchases will show which it was. A return to a quarterly pace above $1 billion would mean the pause was timing; a continued trickle would mean acquisitions and litigation now take the cash that used to shrink the share count.
