Home Depot (HD) — moat facet
Home Depot held its gross margin within a tenth of a point for three years while sales fell and its lower-margin distributors grew.
A retailer without pricing power sees its gross margin fall when demand weakens. Home Depot's barely moved: 33.4% in fiscal 2023, 33.4% in fiscal 2024 and 33.3% in fiscal 20251, years in which comparable sales fell 3.2%, fell 1.8% and rose 0.3%2. Gross profit was $54,865 million in fiscal 20253.
That stability came while the mix was moving against it. The distributors added in fiscal 2024 and 2025 carry lower margins than the stores, and the 10-Q says the inclusion of GMS lowered gross margin in the first six months of fiscal 20264. Holding the consolidated figure flat therefore required the stores to hold or raise their own.
The second quarter of fiscal 2026 printed 33.7% against 33.4%5, but that was flattered. Home Depot recognised about $685 million of IEEPA tariff refunds as a reduction of cost of goods sold6, about 1.4% of the quarter's sales7, and the 10-Q says the benefit was largely offset by incremental cost pressures related to fuel, energy, and other product input costs8.
Guidance for fiscal 2026 is a gross margin of approximately 33.1%9, slightly lower than fiscal 2025, as the distributors grow.
The refunds were almost all booked at once. Of about $730 million received by 2 August 2026, about $685 million went to cost of goods sold and the rest reduced inventory cost10, representing the vast majority of the refunds Home Depot expects11. The third quarter will show the margin without most of that help.
This is a narrow but durable advantage. The gross margin for fiscal 2026 is the figure that tests it: a result below 33% without the refunds would mean the stores are losing the ability to pass costs on.
33.4%, 33.4%, 33.3%; guided to about 33.1% for fiscal 2026.
Pricing power through the cycle; a margin below 33% without refunds would mean costs are no longer passed on.
