Lowe's: The Twin at a Third of the ValueWide moat

Home Depot (HD) — moat facet

Lowe's sells the same goods in the same format and is worth about a third as much as Home Depot.

Home Depot's only head-on rival is Lowe's, and the gap between them is large. Lowe's has trailing revenue of $90.43 billion and net income of $6.63 billion1, against Home Depot's $169.18 billion of revenue2. Lowe's revenue is about 53% of Home Depot's; its market value of $106.20 billion3 is about 36% of Home Depot's $292.52 billion45.

Twice the revenue, almost three times the value.

The market values Lowe's at 16.00 times earnings6 and Home Depot at 20.527. Investors pay more for each dollar of Home Depot's profit, and more still for each dollar of its revenue, because Home Depot earns more on each sale: net margin of 8.6% in fiscal 2025 against about 7.3% for Lowe's trailing figures8.

The two share the same exposure. Both sell to homeowners in a housing market the 10-K describes as having historically low levels of housing turnover9, both depend on repairs rather than moves while rates stay high, and both compete with the same online sellers.

Home Depot's edge over Lowe's is scale and the Pro. It runs 2,359 stores10, and press coverage of its fiscal 2025 results said the Pro business was nearly half of total revenue11.

The price-to-sales gap is wider than the earnings gap. Home Depot trades at 1.73 times trailing revenue12 against about 1.17 times for Lowe's13. The market is paying for Home Depot's higher margin and larger Pro business, not just its size.

The rivalry is stable and Home Depot is ahead. The valuation gap is the figure that tracks it: if Home Depot's price-to-earnings premium over Lowe's narrowed to nothing, the market would be saying the extra Pro business earns no more than Lowe's retail model does.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Revenue about 53% of Home Depot's; market value about 36%.
