$54 Billion of Net DebtNarrow moat
Home Depot (HD) — moat facet
Home Depot carries about $54 billion of net debt after buying its distributors, and is spending its cash paying it down instead of buying back shares.
Home Depot's balance sheet changed to pay for the distributors. At 1 February 2026 it had short-term borrowings of $4,464 million, current long-term debt of $4,967 million and long-term debt of $46,341 million, against cash of $1,389 million1: net debt of about $54.4 billion2, 4.2 times stockholders' equity3. The notes outstanding had a principal of $48.8 billion, $4.6 billion of it payable within 12 months4.
Interest is now a real cost. Interest expense rose from $1,943 million in fiscal 2023 to $2,412 million in fiscal 20255, up 24%6; operating income covers it 8.7 times7. About $5.4 billion of the notes are floating rate, and a one percentage point rise would add about $54 million a year8.
The company is paying it down. It repaid $3,040 million of long-term debt in the first half of fiscal 2026, and net debt fell to about $50.8 billion by 2 August 2026910. Operating cash flow in the half was $11,422 million against $8,968 million11.
The debt is manageable for a business earning over $20 billion of operating income. What it does is remove choices: no buybacks, a modest dividend raise, and less room for another large purchase.
The commercial paper programme adds flexibility. Home Depot can borrow up to $11.0 billion under it, and had $4.5 billion outstanding at 3.7% at the end of fiscal 202512; the maximum outstanding during the first half of fiscal 2026 was $6.2 billion13. Short-term borrowing is how the company bridges the season.
Future interest payments on the notes total $25.4 billion14, a figure larger than the purchase price of SRS.
This facet is narrow and narrowing. Net debt is the figure to watch; below $45 billion would put buybacks back on the table, while a rise would mean another acquisition came first.
Net debt $54.4bn at 1 February 2026, $50.8bn at 2 August 2026.
The constraint on buybacks; below about $45bn buybacks can resume, above $55bn another deal came first.
