The Supply Houses the Distributors Now FightThin moat

Home Depot (HD) — moat facet

In roofing, wallboard and pool supply Home Depot competes as one distributor among many, and earns 2.5% on sales.

By buying SRS and GMS, Home Depot moved into a market where it has no special advantage. The 10-K lists electrical, plumbing and building materials supply houses and lumber yards among its rivals, and for some products MRO distributors and national and local wholesale supply distributors1. These are the competitors SRS, GMS and HD Supply face every day.

Sales doubled; operating income did not.

The margins show the difference. The Other segment, SRS and GMS, earned $316 million on $12,717 million of sales in fiscal 20252, 2.5%3, and 5.6% before intangible amortisation4. In the first half of fiscal 2026 it earned $263 million on $9,057 million5.

The market is cyclical as well as competitive. Industry shingle shipments fell 28% year over year in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 to the lowest industry volume since 20196, and roofing was about 53% of Other segment sales that year7.

Home Depot's bet is that it can do better in this market than a standalone distributor, by sharing product catalogues, logistics and supply chains between the stores and SRS8. That advantage is still a plan.

The comparison with the stores' own Pro business is instructive. The stores serve the Pro who needs something today; the supply houses serve the one who plans a job. SRS gives Home Depot the second kind of relationship, at the supply houses' margins rather than the stores'.

This is a thin position. Other segment operating margin is the proof required: a figure above 6% for a full year would show Home Depot brings something to the distribution business that the supply houses lack.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Other margin 2.5% in fiscal 2025, 4.9% in Q2 fiscal 2026.

The acquired distributors' earnings against the supply houses; a margin above 6% would show an edge.
