⚠ An $11.7 Billion Authorization Sitting IdleLow threat
Home Depot (HD) — threat to the moat
Home Depot has $11.7 billion of buyback authorization it is not using, so earnings per share now depend on the business alone.
Home Depot has about $11.7 billion left on its buyback authorization1, and in the second quarter of fiscal 2026 it repurchased no stock in the open market; the only shares acquired were 10,491 withheld for taxes2.
The constraint is the balance sheet. Net debt was about $50.8 billion at 2 August 20263, and the company says it is seeking to reduce outstanding debt4.
Without buybacks, earnings per share can grow only as fast as net income. Fiscal 2026 guidance is diluted EPS flat to up 4%5, with no help from a shrinking share count.
The remaining authorization, $11,657,503,041 at 2 August 20266, is about 4% of the company's market value7. Spent over two years, it would retire a meaningful slice of the shares; left idle, it is a promise without a date.
What would change the verdict is a resumption announcement. Until then, earnings per share can grow only as fast as the business, which has been flat for three years.
