✦ Paying Down Debt to Buy Back SharesNarrow moat

Home Depot (HD) — the future bets

Home Depot is repaying debt to earn back the buybacks that used to drive its earnings per share.

Home Depot's financial bet is patience. It paused share repurchases in March 2024 for the SRS purchase and does not have plans to resume share repurchases in fiscal 2026 as it seeks to reduce outstanding debt1. About $11.7 billion of authorization remains2.

Debt repayment before buybacks.

The paydown is under way. Home Depot repaid $3,040 million of long-term debt in the first half of fiscal 20263, and net debt fell from about $54.4 billion in February to about $50.8 billion in August4. Operating cash flow in the half was $11,422 million against $8,968 million a year earlier5.

The debt repayment comes first; the buyback resumes only after it. Between fiscal 2015 and fiscal 2025 diluted shares fell 22%6.

The bet is sound but slow, and it competes with the urge to buy more distributors. Mingledorff's cost about $1.1 billion in the middle of the paydown7.

The dividend still comes first. In the first half of fiscal 2026 Home Depot paid $4,643 million of dividends, repaid $3,040 million of long-term debt and spent $1,724 million on capital expenditure and $1,333 million on acquisitions8. Buybacks come last in the company's stated order: invest, pay dividends, then return excess cash9.

This is a narrow, stable bet. The amount of long-term debt repaid each half is the figure to watch; another $3 billion in the second half would put buybacks within reach for fiscal 2027.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

$3.0bn repaid in H1 fiscal 2026; buybacks not planned in fiscal 2026.
