Buybacks: $15 Billion in One Year, None Since Early 2024Narrow moat

Home Depot (HD) — moat facet

Home Depot bought back $69 billion of stock in nine years and has bought back none since March 2024.

For a decade Home Depot returned most of its cash through buybacks. It repurchased $7,000 million of stock in fiscal 2015, $10,000 million in fiscal 2018 and $15,001 million in fiscal 2021123, about $69.2 billion across fiscal 2015 to 20234. Diluted shares fell from 1,283 million to 995 million over the decade56, 22% fewer7.

From $15 billion to nothing.

Then it stopped. The 10-K says: "In March 2024, we paused share repurchases in connection with the SRS acquisition" and that it does not have plans to resume share repurchases in fiscal 2026 as it seeks to reduce outstanding debt8. Repurchases were $649 million in fiscal 2024 and nothing in fiscal 20259, and about $11.7 billion remains of a $15.0 billion authorization from August 202310.

The pause shows up at once. Diluted shares were 993 million in fiscal 2024 and 995 million in fiscal 202511; earnings per share now grow only as fast as net income, which fell.

The choice was deliberate: debt repayment over buybacks. Long-term debt of $3,040 million was repaid in the first half of fiscal 202612.

The authorization itself is recent. The $15.0 billion programme was approved in August 2023, and about $11.7 billion of it remains13. The board has left it in place, which keeps the option open without committing to use it.

This facet of the moat, the ability to shrink the share count every year, is paused rather than gone. The diluted share count is the signal: the first quarter in which it falls again will mark the end of the SRS digestion.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

No repurchases in fiscal 2025 or the first half of fiscal 2026.

The share count that buybacks used to shrink; a return to falling would mark the end of the debt paydown.
