Upstream United StatesNarrow moat
Chevron (CVX) — moat facet
Chevron's American oil fields sell most of their output to Chevron's own refineries and earned 6.9 percent on their assets in 2025.
American upstream is where Chevron's oil and gas come out of the ground at home, and it sells more to Chevron than to anyone else. External sales were $19,608 million in 20251, 10.6 percent of the company's total2. Before eliminations the segment's sales were $45,518 million, of which $25,910 million went to other Chevron segments3, about 57 percent4, mostly as crude and gas shipped to its own refineries.
Inside it are the Permian, with more than 1,750,000 net acres and a million barrels a day in 202556; the DJ Basin in Colorado, where Chevron is the largest oil and gas producer with about 580,000 net acres7; the Bakken, about 469,000 net acres from Hess8; the deepwater Gulf of America; and California. American production was 1,858 thousand barrels of oil equivalent a day in 20259.
It is paid in two prices. In the second quarter of 2026 American liquids realised $70.80 a barrel and American gas $0.91 per thousand cubic feet10. Nothing else sets the revenue.
The history is a record of the price. External sales were $4,117 million in 201511 and $20,952 million in 202212. Earnings were negative in 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2020: minus $4,055 million, minus $2,054 million, minus $5,094 million and minus $1,608 million131415. They were $12,621 million in 2022, $4,148 million in 2023, $7,602 million in 2024 and $5,815 million in 20251617.
Profitability is high per dollar of sales and ordinary per dollar of capital. On sales before eliminations, 2025 earnings were about 12.8 percent18; on year-end segment assets of $84,559 million, up from $60,914 million with Hess19, they were about 6.9 percent20. Chevron spent $9,777 million of capital here in 202521.
The latest quarter shows the leverage. American upstream earned $3,541 million in the second quarter of 2026, against $1,418 million a year earlier22, and $5,653 million in the first half against $3,276 million23.
Hess made this segment larger and more varied. It brought about 463 thousand net acres in the Bakken and about 31 thousand barrels a day of Gulf of America production24. Chevron also sold 70 percent of its Haynesville gas interest in 2025, keeping 30 percent and an overriding royalty25, a sign that it wants the oil-weighted acreage more than the dry gas. American upstream capital spending was $9,777 million in 2025, against $6,113 million abroad26.
The segment is also where Chevron's reserves are concentrated: 43 percent of proved reserves are in the United States27. That makes the American upstream the part of the company least exposed to foreign governments and most exposed to American gas prices.
The outlook is a larger asset base carrying flat shale spending of nearly $6 billion a year28 and new Gulf fields. Earnings per dollar of segment assets is the number that would change the verdict; above 10 percent at $70 oil would show the Hess acreage and the new fields earning their cost.
Record US production in Q2 2026; asset base up with Hess.
The price-driven swing in the home fields; returns on the enlarged asset base are the test.
