Chevron (CVX) — threat to the moat

Australia's gas lasts decades, which gives Canberra decades in which to change the tax.

An asset that lasts forty years has forty years in which to be taxed again. Chevron's risk factors say that governments "including California and Australia, have announced, proposed, or implemented windfall profit taxes"1. Australia is named alongside California, the state Chevron has just moved its headquarters out of.

Foreign currency effects on earnings ($M)-2242023+5202024-4692025Chevron Form 10-K FY2025 earnings table
A swing of nearly a billion dollars between two years.

The currency is the other claim. Chevron reports in dollars and pays many of its Australian costs in Australian dollars, and in 2025 foreign currency effects reduced earnings by $469 million, after adding $520 million in 20242. The company attributed the 2025 loss largely to Australia3.

Neither risk touches the rock or the plant. Both reduce what Chevron keeps from them, and the length of the asset's life means a rule changed in one decade applies for the next three.

The exposure is large enough to matter at group level. Australia produced 472 thousand barrels of oil equivalent a day for Chevron in 2025, about 13 percent of the total45, so a change in Australian tax or currency moves the whole company's earnings, not just one segment's.

The quantity to follow is foreign currency effects in the annual earnings table, together with any new Australian resource tax. A second year of losses near $500 million would say the currency is a standing cost rather than noise.
