Record Cash Flow at the Same PriceNarrow moat

Chevron (CVX) — moat facet

Chevron produced more operating cash in 2025 at $69 Brent than in 2024 at $81, which is what Hess's barrels were bought to do.

The best evidence that Chevron's cost and growth programmes are working is in its cash flow, not its earnings. In 2025 it generated $33,939 million of cash from operations, up from $31,492 million in 20241, with Brent averaging $69 against $812. The company described it as "the highest cash flow from operations in the company's history at similar commodity prices"3.

More cash on a lower oil price.

Earnings fell over the same period, from $17,661 million to $12,299 million4, largely because depreciation rose with Hess, from $17,282 million to $20,132 million5. Depreciation is a charge for money already spent; operating cash flow is money coming in.

Free cash flow was $16.6 billion in 2025 against $15.0 billion in 20246. In the second quarter of 2026, with Brent at $104, operating cash flow reached $22.6 billion and free cash flow $18.1 billion in a single quarter7.

That is the case for the Hess purchase in one number: more barrels mean more cash at any price, and at $69 the extra volume more than made up for the lower price.

The decade shows the range. Operating cash flow was $19,456 million in 2015, $10,577 million in 2020 and $49,602 million in 20228. Cash from operations moves with the oil price as much as earnings do; what changed in 2025 is how much comes from each dollar of Brent.

The test is cash from operations at a matched price. If a future year at $70 Brent does not produce more operating cash than 2025's $33.9 billion, the production growth will have stopped paying for itself.

Moat trajectory: Widening

CFFO $33.9bn at $69 Brent; $22.6bn in Q2 2026 alone.

Cash per barrel at a given price; a $70 year below 2025's $33.9bn would mean growth stopped paying.
