✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat
Chevron (CVX) — the future bets
Chevron's growth to 2030 is Guyana's vessels and the Gulf's fields; the plan's real promise is three more points of return.
Chevron's future is mostly decided by where its $17 billion of 2026 upstream capital goes. The plan puts nearly $6 billion into American shale and tight oil and about $7 billion into offshore developments in Guyana, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf of America1. Production is expected to grow 2 percent to 3 percent a year through 20302.
The four pages below cover the bets that could change the company's results rather than maintain them: Guyana's eight vessels, the deepwater Gulf of America, new positions in Iraq, Libya and Venezuela, and the 2030 plan that binds them. The Israeli gas expansions are covered under The Moat, and the Microsoft power plant under Major Clients.
Production reached 4,070 thousand barrels of oil equivalent a day in the second quarter of 2026, up about 20 percent on a year earlier34, mostly because of Hess. The question for the future is whether growth continues without another acquisition.
None of these bets changes the price Chevron receives. What they can change is the cost of each barrel and the share of reserves in long-lived fields, which is what the moat pages argue matters.
Capital for these bets competes with the payout. The investor day plan tied buybacks of $10 billion to $20 billion a year to Brent of $60 to $805, so a weaker oil price squeezes the bets and the buyback together.
The measure for the whole branch is production growth without acquisitions. The legacy business added 124 thousand barrels a day in 20256; if organic growth stays near that level while Guyana ramps, the 2 percent to 3 percent plan is being met by the assets rather than by deals.
Guyana and Gulf ramps under way; plan targets met early.
Growth largely from Hess; organic growth near 124 MBOED a year is the test of the assets.
