Chevron (CVX) — threat to the moat
Chevron's chief executive is 65, past the retirement age the board waived for him, with no named successor.
Chevron's execution has been led by one person for eight years. Michael Wirth became chief executive in 2018 and is 651; the board waived Chevron's mandatory retirement age of 65 for him in 20232. In December 2025 he told Reuters: "as soon as we've got the next person ready to go, my job is to get out of the way"3, and "I'm not going to bank on many more years after year 10"4.
No successor had been named in the latest filings. Senior departures are adding to the turnover: the chief legal officer is to resign at the end of 20265.
Succession matters most at a company whose recent strategy, from Noble to PDC to Hess, has been a sequence of large capital decisions. A new chief executive inherits the Hess integration, the Tengiz concession question and the buyback promise at once.
The board has its own age rules: the mandatory retirement age for non-employee directors is 746. Wirth himself owns 1,207,619 Chevron shares7, a stake that aligns him with the dividend he protects.
The marker is simple: the name of the next chief executive, and whether it is an internal candidate who ran the Hess integration or an outsider. A choice made in a hurry, or one that coincides with a change of strategy, would be the moment the execution record stops being a guide.
