◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Chevron (CVX) — the variant view

Chevron trades at 12.8 times forward earnings only if $104 oil lasts; on 2025 earnings the same price is 33 times.

The market is valuing Chevron on oil prices it has only seen for one quarter. At $403.40 billion1, Chevron trades at about 19.6 times trailing earnings of $20,591 million2. But those trailing earnings include a second quarter of $12,072 million earned at $104 Brent, with $1.4 billion of favourable timing effects3. On 2025's earnings of $12,299 million4, the same market value is about 32.8 times5.

Market value over earnings19.6xTrailing twelve months32.8x2025 earnings12.8xForwardstockanalysis.com statistics; calculated from Chevron filings
The same price is cheap or dear depending on which year of oil you believe.

The forward multiple says the same thing from the other side. A forward P/E of 12.776 implies expected earnings of about $31.6 billion over the next year7, more than two and a half times 2025's. That is a forecast of high prices persisting, not of Chevron doing anything differently.

What the price does not seem to carry is the list of things that do not move with Brent. The share count rose by about 13 percent with Hess8; Tengiz's concession ends in 20339; the return on capital employed was 6.6 percent in 202510; and the dividend of $6.84 exceeded earnings per share of $6.6311.

The shares are up 30.64 percent in a year12, and analysts' average target is $222.6713. That is a market pricing in the Middle East conflict continuing to support the oil price.

The market also prices Chevron as a low-risk holding: a beta of 0.4914. That is a judgement about the dividend and the balance sheet, not about the oil price, which is where the earnings risk actually sits.

The number that will settle it is Brent's quarterly average once the conflict eases. Chevron's own plan counts on $60 to $8015; if Brent returns there and earnings return toward $12 billion a year, a $403 billion valuation is about thirty times normal earnings for a company earning below its cost of capital.
