◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In

Amgen (AMGN) — the variant view

Amgen trades near 18 times forward earnings after a 48% rise, and the $10.7 billion IRS dispute and the TAVNEOS proceeding are not in that number.

Amgen's shares have had an excellent year. At $414.61 on 25 September 20261, a market value of $224.15 billion2, the price was up 48.49% in fifty-two weeks3, above the analysts' average target of $388.434. The trailing price-to-earnings ratio was 25.76 and the forward ratio 17.655.

Cheap on forward earnings, dear on book.

The market is paying for the growth drivers, and fairly. Revenue rose 10% in 20256 and 10% again in the second quarter of 20267 despite the denosumab erosion, and guidance was raised to $38.2 to $39.4 billion8. Free cash flow over the trailing twelve months was about $10.2 billion9, about 4.5% of the market value10.

What the adjusted multiple leaves out is two binary events. The IRS asserts about $10.7 billion of tax and penalties over Puerto Rico11, with a Tax Court decision expected no earlier than late 2026 or early 202712. And the FDA has proposed withdrawing TAVNEOS, whose intangible is carried at $2.4 billion13. Neither appears in Amgen's non-GAAP earnings until it happens.

The balance sheet also changes the reading. With $57.3 billion of debt14, the enterprise value is $267.47 billion15, and the price-to-book ratio is 19.1816 because years of buybacks left equity thin.

The market may also be pricing MariTide more generously than the data justify, or less; the shares fell 12% on its first headline17.

The move this year was large by Amgen's own history. Its market value was $122.45 billion at the end of 2015 and $176.25 billion at the end of 202518; the rise to $224.15 billion in 2026 is about 27% in nine months19, nearly as much as the previous ten years added together20. The dividend, $10.08 a year, yields 2.43% at this price21.

The one number that reconciles the views is the Tax Court decision. A ruling for Amgen would leave the forward multiple of about 18 looking reasonable for a company growing high single digits; a ruling for the IRS would take roughly a year's earnings off the value the market is now paying for.
