Pricing Power, After the DeductionsNarrow moat

Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet

Amgen gives back more than half of every gross dollar it bills, and the share has risen from 41% to 54% in six years.

Amgen's pricing power is best measured by what it keeps, and that share has fallen for six years. Sales deductions took 41% of gross product sales in 2019 and 54% in 202512, $41,983 million in the latest year, about 1.19 times net product sales34.

Deductions overtook net sales.

The company still grows because volume outruns price. In 2025 product sales rose 10% on 13% more volume and 3% lower net prices5. That is a healthy franchise, but its growth now depends on treating more patients, not on raising what each pays.

The pressure comes from four directions at once. The Inflation Reduction Act lets Medicare set prices: CMS selected ENBREL for 2026 and Otezla for 20276. The 340B programme widens the discount on older drugs7. States are acting too, with Colorado setting a limit on ENBREL8. And Amgen has agreed to the administration's most-favoured-nation pricing requests9. The two drugs already hit, ENBREL and Otezla, sold $4,491 million in 202510, about 12% of total revenues11.

Amgen's response has been to keep adding young drugs faster than old ones are repriced. The chief executive's six key growth drivers grew 26% in the second quarter of 202612.

The 2026 figures have the same shape. In the first half product sales rose 7%, driven by volume growth of 9%, partially offset by lower net selling price13, and in the second quarter American volume grew 9% and foreign volume 8%14. Amgen is selling more medicine in every market and keeping less for each unit. At the end of 2025 it owed $10,606 million of accrued sales deductions15, rebates and discounts already earned by payers but not yet paid.

The facet is narrow and narrowing. The figure that would falsify even that verdict is the deductions ratio: at 54% it already takes more than half of gross sales16; a move to 60% alongside slowing volume would say Amgen's prices are being set almost entirely by others.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Deductions rising; Medicare prices for ENBREL (2026) and Otezla (2027).
