Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet
Three wholesalers buy 77% of Amgen's gross sales, but the customers who set its prices are the payers who take $38.7 billion of rebates and chargebacks.
By revenue, Amgen's customer base is as concentrated as any in this app. McKesson, Cencora and Cardinal Health each accounted for more than 10% of total revenues in 2025, 2024 and 2023, and together for 77%, 77% and 79% of worldwide gross revenues1. At the end of 2025 they held 75% of Amgen's net trade receivables, against 70% a year earlier2.
By backlog, there is nothing to measure. Amgen's annual report contains no order backlog and no remaining-performance-obligation schedule of the kind an equipment or software company reports. Drugs are shipped as the wholesalers order them, so the forward view comes from prescriptions and patents, not from contracts. Revenue concentration and backlog concentration therefore give opposite answers: very high on the first, not applicable on the second.
The wholesalers are distributors, not decision-makers. The parties that decide Amgen's net price are the insurers, benefit managers and governments that receive its rebates, $21,697 million of them in 20253, and the hospitals and pharmacies behind $16,988 million of chargebacks4. Their effect is covered on the Pricing Power page.
Two other kinds of customer matter at the margin: the partners and licensees who pay Amgen $1,603 million a year of other revenues5, and the customers outside the United States, 27% of product sales6.
The concentration has barely moved in three years. The three wholesalers took 79% of gross revenues in 2023 and 77% in 2024 and 2025, with McKesson alone at 34% in 20257. What has moved is the credit exposure: they held 75% of net trade receivables at the end of 2025 against 70% a year earlier8, on receivables that rose about 41%9.
The concentration figure to follow is the three wholesalers' share of receivables, 75% at the end of 202510. A further rise would mean more of Amgen's cash waits on three companies each year; it is also why the 10-K warns that a security breach at the wholesalers could significantly impair its ability to deliver products11.
Wholesaler concentration steady at 77-79%; receivables share rising.
Distributor concentration of Amgen's cash; a further rise would put more of it in three counterparties' hands.
