No Backlog, Only PrescriptionsNarrow moat

Amgen (AMGN) — moat facet

Amgen has no order backlog at all; its forward book is patients who keep refilling prescriptions, protected only by patents.

An equipment maker reports a backlog; a software company reports contracted revenue not yet recognised. Amgen reports neither. Its annual report contains no order backlog and no remaining-performance-obligation schedule, because it ships drugs as wholesalers order them and is paid within weeks. So the question of how concentrated its backlog is has no answer.

2026 total revenues guidance ($bn, midpoint)37.7Feb 202637.8Apr 202638.8Aug 2026Amgen FY2025, Q1 2026 and Q2 2026 results releases; midpoints calculated
Guidance instead of a backlog.

What stands in for a backlog is the patient who keeps taking a drug. A person on Repatha for cholesterol or on EVENITY for osteoporosis generates repeat orders without any new sale, which is why product sales rose 10% in 2025 on 13% volume growth1. The durability of that stream is set by patents and by competition, not by contracts.

The balance sheet shows the timing gap instead. Trade receivables were $9,570 million at the end of 2025, against $6,782 million a year earlier2, up about 41%3 while total revenues rose 10%4. Accrued sales deductions, the rebates owed but not yet paid, were $10,606 million5. The 10-K attributes 21% of net trade receivables to customers outside the United States, against 26% a year earlier6.

Without a backlog, the forward signal is the guidance. Amgen raised its 2026 revenue range twice, from $37.0 to $38.4 billion in February to $38.2 to $39.4 billion in August78.

The figure that matters here is receivables growth against revenue growth. A second year in which receivables grow four times as fast as revenue would say Amgen is being paid more slowly, and in a business with no order book, cash collection is the nearest thing to a leading indicator.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Guidance raised twice in 2026; receivables up 41% in 2025.

Trade receivables
$9,570M (end-2025), up about 41% from $6,782M

The timing of cash in a business with no backlog; another year of receivables growing far faster than revenue would mean slower payment.
