Livestock: $3.9 Billion Across the Food ChainNarrow moat
Merck & Co. (MRK) — moat facet
Livestock is six in ten of Merck's Animal Health dollars, and its 2025 jump came partly from buying Elanco's fish business.
Most of Merck's Animal Health business is about food, not pets. Livestock products sold $3,896 million in 2025, against $2,458 million for companion animals1, about 61.3% of the segment2. They include vaccines and medicines for cattle, pigs, poultry and fish.
Livestock is where the segment has grown. Livestock sales were $3,295 million in 2021, $3,300 million in 2022, $3,337 million in 2023 and $3,462 million in 202434, then rose about 12.5% in 20255. Part of the step came from acquisition: in July 2024 Merck bought the aqua business of Elanco Animal Health, paying $1,303 million in cash6.
Merck keeps buying here. In 2026 its Animal Health business completed the acquisition of TARGAN, a maker of poultry biodevices7. The segment also sells digitally connected identification, traceability and monitoring products8, which tie a farmer's data to Merck's products.
The moat in livestock is scale in manufacturing and relationships with large producers. Its risks are specific: the company lists epidemics affecting livestock, government procurement practices, weather and global agribusiness conditions9.
The second quarter continued the trend. Animal Health's 8% growth in the quarter was attributed to both livestock and companion portfolios10, and the TARGAN purchase adds poultry biodevices to the livestock offering11. Merck is building the livestock side into a broader farm-technology business.
Livestock is the steady engine of Animal Health. Its sales, $3,896 million in 202512, are the number to follow; growth that falls back to the 1% a year of 2021 to 2023 once the aqua purchase is absorbed would mean the 2025 jump was bought rather than earned.
Flat 2021-2023, then +12.5% in 2025 with the aqua acquisition.
The segment's larger half; growth sliding back toward 1% would mean 2025's rise was bought.
