Platform SolutionsThin moat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet

Goldman's consumer business lost about $7 billion in five years and is now little more than the Apple Card on its way out.

Platform Solutions is the last piece of Goldman's consumer strategy, and it is being closed. Its net revenues were $151 million in 2025, against $2,129 million in 2024 and $2,058 million in 2023 on the restated basis1. Pre-tax results were a profit of $151 million in 2025 and losses of $997 million in 2024 and $2,024 million in 20232.

Platform Solutions pre-tax loss, as reported ($M)-7832020-1,0472021-1,9892022-2,1752023-1,0752024Goldman Sachs Forms 10-K FY2022 and FY2024, as-reported basis
About $7.1bn lost in five years.

What is inside is now mostly one product. The 10-K says "Substantially all of the revenues in Platform Solutions are from activities related to issuing credit cards to and raising deposits from Apple Card customers and related to businesses that have been exited"3. Transaction banking was moved out to Global Banking & Markets in the fourth-quarter 2025 restatement4.

The history is a retreat. Goldman bought GreenSky in 2022 and agreed to sell it in the fourth quarter of 2023, after a $506 million write-down of GreenSky intangibles and a $504 million goodwill impairment in consumer platforms5. It sold substantially all of the Marcus loan portfolio in 20236, sold the General Motors card program in 2025, and in December 2025 agreed to transition the Apple Card to another issuer over about 24 months7. The JPMorgan page identifies the buyer as Chase8.

It was paid as a card issuer: interest on balances, interchange and fees, less credit losses. That model needed a large, cheap deposit base and years to mature. On the as-reported basis the segment lost $783 million in 2020, $1,047 million in 2021, $1,989 million in 2022, $2,175 million in 2023 and $1,075 million in 2024910, about $7.1 billion in total11.

The 2025 figures are distorted by the exit. Fourth-quarter markdowns and termination costs of $2.26 billion reduced revenue, and a $2.48 billion reserve release more than offset them in provisions12. In the second quarter of 2026 revenue fell 64% to $221 million and the segment lost $48 million before tax1314. Segment assets were $28 billion and loans $20 billion at the end of 202515.

On the old basis the segment's credit costs were the heart of the problem. Its provision for credit losses was $1,728 million in 2022, $1,135 million in 2023 and $1,540 million in 202416, against net revenues of $1,502 million, $2,378 million and $2,427 million17. In 2022 provisions exceeded revenue, and in 2023 and 2024 they took about 48% and 63% of it18.

The quarter-by-quarter figures show the run-off. Platform Solutions earned $619 million in the second quarter of 2025, $411 million in the first quarter of 2026 and $221 million in the second19. A year earlier its provisions had come mainly from the credit card portfolio20; now the portfolio sits in held for sale.

There is no growth outlook, only an exit timetable. Until the transfer closes, a quarterly pre-tax loss above $200 million would mean the portfolio held for sale was costing more than the markdowns so far suggest.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Revenue $2.1bn (2024) to $151M (2025); Apple Card transition.

The cost of the exit; losses above $200M a quarter would mean the held-for-sale portfolio cost more than expected.
