Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat

Three-quarters of Goldman's record quarter came from trading and banking, a larger share than two years ago.

Goldman's record results rest on the segment that swings most. Global Banking & Markets earned $15,520 million of the firm's $20,338 million of net revenues in the second quarter of 2026, about 76%12. For 2025 it was about 71%, and for 2023 about 65%3. The dependence on markets has risen, not fallen, even as the asset business grew.

The market share of revenue keeps rising.

The quarter was exceptional. Equities revenue rose 72%, investment banking fees 55% and FICC 32%4. Pre-tax earnings rose 73%5. Average daily value-at-risk was $120 million, against $90 million across 202567.

The firm's history shows what happens next. Net revenues fell about 20% from 2021 to 2022, and net earnings nearly halved89. Return on equity fell from 23.0% to 10.2%10.

The market knows this. The shares traded at about 13.5 times trailing earnings in September 202611, below the 15.3 times at the end of 202512, and 19% below their 52-week high1314.

Other revenue in the segment, which includes transaction banking, fell to $117 million in the second quarter from $561 million in the first15. The quarter's record was concentrated in equities and banking fees, the two lines most tied to market activity.

The first quarter of 2026 had the same shape, with Global Banking & Markets at $12,738 million of $17,227 million16, about 74%17. Two quarters in a row above 70% is the new normal, not a single spike.

Two numbers together decide it. A trading share above 70% through a weak year with firm return on equity above 12% would show the franchise earns its keep without a boom; the same share with returns near 10% would show it does not.
