✦ $750 Billion of Alternatives by 2030Narrow moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — the future bets
Goldman needs about $65 billion a year of net new private-fund assets to hit its 2030 goal, and is raising money faster than that.
Goldman's biggest stated growth goal is in alternatives. It targets $750 billion of alternatives assets under supervision by 2030, annual fundraising of $75 billion to $100 billion, and double-digit annual growth in alternatives management and other fees1.
From $459 billion in June 20262, reaching $750 billion requires about $291 billion more, or roughly $65 billion a year over four and a half years3. The fundraising pace is ahead of that: $115 billion in 2025 and $59 billion in the second quarter of 2026 alone45. But fundraising is gross, and assets also leave as funds return capital.
The reward is the fee rate. The average effective fee on alternatives was 58 basis points in the second quarter of 20266. At that rate, $291 billion of additional assets would bring about $1.7 billion of extra annual fees7, a large sum against Asset & Wealth Management pre-tax earnings of $4,127 million in 20258.
The bet also changes what kind of firm Goldman is. Alternatives fees are long-term, locked up for years in closed-end funds, and far steadier than trading.
The fundraising split shows where the money goes. Of the record $115 billion in 2025, $48 billion went to corporate equity and $34 billion to credit9. Alternatives were $459 billion of $2,976 billion of long-term assets in June 202610, about 15%11.
The starting point is steeper than the June figure suggests. Total alternatives assets averaged $406 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025 at an effective fee of 57 basis points12. The first half of 2026 added $5 billion of alternative inflows from the Industry Ventures purchase alone13.
The gap should shrink by about $65 billion a year. Alternatives assets still below $550 billion at the end of 2027 would put the 2030 goal out of reach.
Alternatives AUS $459bn vs $750bn 2030 target.
The distance to the 2030 goal; it should shrink by about $65bn a year.
