The Asset GathererNarrow moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet
Goldman built a four-trillion-dollar fee business to steady its trading profits, and it is only now starting to earn good returns.
The third part of Goldman's moat is the one it has spent six years building: Asset & Wealth Management. The segment earned net revenues of $14,202 million in 2023, $16,316 million in 2024 and $16,679 million in 2025 on the restated basis1. Pre-tax earnings were $1,763 million, $4,865 million and $4,127 million2.
The revenue is increasingly a fee on clients' money. Management and other fees were $11,538 million in 2025, incentive fees $489 million, private banking and lending $3,347 million and investments $1,305 million3. Assets under supervision reached a record $4.04 trillion in June 20264.
The advantages are distribution and trust. Goldman sells its funds to the institutions it already serves and to wealth clients who hold about $2.0 trillion with it5. Cerulli ranked it the leading US outsourced chief investment officer manager6. And a family that keeps its trusts, loans and investments in one private bank rarely moves.
The weakness is return. The segment's return on equity was 12.5% in 20257, against 16.4% in Global Banking & Markets. The firm has raised its targets for the segment, from mid-teens returns and a mid-twenties margin to high-teens returns and a pre-tax margin of about 30%8. The 2025 margin was about 25%9.
The second quarter of 2026 showed progress: segment revenue of $4,597 million, up 20%10, pre-tax earnings of $1,112 million and return on equity of 13.8%11.
The firm's own measure of the segment's return has two parts it wants to shrink. The 2025 return on equity of 12.5% included about 2.3 percentage points of drag from historical principal investments and the FDIC special assessment12. On the older segment basis the 2024 return was 12.8% and the 2023 return 3.2%13, so the direction is right even where the level is not.
By asset class in June 2026, equity held $1,123 billion and fixed income $1,394 billion14. The fixed-income book is the largest and the lowest-fee; the alternatives book is the smallest and the richest.
The moat here is narrow for now: large and sticky, but not yet earning more than its cost of equity by a wide margin. Two straight years of high-teens returns would justify calling it wide; a slide back toward 10% would say the fees still carry too much capital.
AWM revenue $14.2bn (2023) to $16.7bn (2025); targets raised.
The size of the fee business; a year-on-year decline with markets flat would mean assets or fee rates were slipping.
