Buybacks: $12.4 Billion at $654 a ShareNarrow moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet
Goldman shrinks its share count by several percent a year, and lately has been buying at the top of its price range.
Goldman returns most of what it earns. It bought back $5,796 million of stock in 2023, $8,000 million in 2024 and $12,360 million in 20251, and returned $16.78 billion to common shareholders in 2025 including dividends2. In the second quarter of 2026 it returned $5.36 billion, $4.00 billion of it in buybacks3.
The share count shows it. Basic shares were 322.9 million at the end of 2024, 307.1 million at the end of 2025 and 298.4 million in June 202645, about 8% fewer6. The firm said in January 2026 it had about $32 billion of capacity under its repurchase authorisation7.
The dividend has grown faster than the earnings. It was raised to $5.00 a quarter from $4.50, paid on 29 September 20268, and the firm says it has grown the quarterly dividend more than 450% since 20189. The payout ratio was 27.3% in 202510.
Buybacks are only as good as the price paid. The average cost was $345.87 in 2023, $457.82 in 2024 and $654.45 in 202511, and $984.57 in the second quarter of 202612, against $935.45 on 25 September 202613.
The pace in the fourth quarter of 2025 was $3.00 billion of buybacks, 3.6 million shares at an average cost of $822.3314. The committee that set the chief executive's pay cited nearly $17 billion of capital returned to common shareholders in 202515. By the second quarter of 2026 the average price had reached $984.5716.
The diluted share count behind earnings per share fell to an average of 306.5 million in the first half of 2026, from 321.4 million a year earlier17. That alone lifted earnings per share by about 5%18, before any growth in profit.
If the count keeps falling about 2% a year with CET1 above 12%, the returns are sustainable; a pause would say capital had become the constraint.
Basic shares 322.9M (2024) to 298.4M (June 2026).
The pace of capital return; a pause with CET1 falling would say capital had become the constraint.
