Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat

The last time Goldman's markets cooled, its revenue fell a fifth and its profit nearly halved.

The trading franchise is wide, but its revenue still follows the market, and the firm's history shows how hard. Net revenues were $59,339 million in 2021 and $47,365 million in 20221, a fall of about 20%2. Net earnings fell from $21,635 million to $11,261 million3, nearly half.

Revenue down 20%, earnings down 48%.

The 2021 peak was not only trading. Asset & Wealth Management's equity investments made that year a record4. But the lesson holds for the segment that now earns most of the money: Global Banking & Markets was about 71% of net revenues in 20255.

Costs do not fall as fast as revenue. Total operating expenses were $37,544 million in 2025 against $33,767 million in 20246, and compensation, the largest part, $18,906 million7.

The pre-tax line fell harder still. Pre-tax earnings were $27,044 million in 2021 and $13,486 million in 20228, while operating expenses fell only from $31,938 million to $31,164 million9. Costs barely moved when revenue fell by about $12 billion10.

Return on equity tells the same story in one line: 23.0% in 2021, 10.2% in 202211. That was a year when Goldman's franchise was intact and its clients had not left. Nothing in the moat stopped the fall, because nothing in the moat sets how much clients trade.

The reference point is 2022. A year in which firm net revenues fell more than 15% while operating expenses held would put return on equity back near 10%, which is where it was in 202212.
