The Alternatives Managers: Rivals for Capital, Clients for FinancingNarrow moat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet

Goldman raises money against the private-fund giants and lends to them from its trading floor, and so far each role helps the other.

The private-fund industry is both a market Goldman is trying to win and a group of clients it serves. On one side, it raises money for its own private equity, credit, real estate and hedge fund strategies: a record $115 billion of gross third-party fundraising in 2025 and $59 billion in the second quarter of 2026 alone12. Alternatives assets under supervision were $459 billion in June 20263.

Lending to funds earns about five times managing them.

On the other side, the trading floor lends to funds. Financing revenue, which includes prime brokerage, repurchase agreements and structured lending, was a record $11.4 billion in 20254. Every fund that borrows from Goldman's prime brokerage is a client; many of the same managers are competitors for pension and endowment money.

The two roles support each other more than they conflict. A pension fund that invests with Goldman's alternatives business may also trade through its desks, and a hedge fund financed by Goldman may use its research and execution. The firm's target of $750 billion of alternatives assets by 20305 depends on the distribution that comes from being a large bank.

The conflict is in credit. Goldman's credit funds raised $34 billion in 20256, and some of that money competes with the leveraged loans its banking business arranges. That tension has its own page under the advisory franchise.

The firm expects annual alternatives fundraising of $75 billion to $100 billion7. In the second quarter of 2026 alone it raised a record $59 billion8, so the expectation looks conservative against current demand.

The two roles are growing at different speeds. FICC and equities financing earned $8,145 million in the first half of 2026910, on course to beat 2025's record $11.4 billion11. The fund side raised a record $59 billion in the second quarter12. Both halves of the relationship are expanding at once.

The relationship works as long as Goldman can be trusted on both sides. If alternatives assets grew less than 10% a year while the fundraising targets stood, investors would be telling Goldman they prefer managers that do not also run a bank.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Alternatives AUS $420bn (2025) to $459bn (June 2026).

$459bn (June 2026) vs $420bn at end-2025

Goldman's weight in the private-fund market; growth below 10% a year would say investors prefer managers without a bank attached.
