⚠ Headroom of About 150 Basis PointsModerate threat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat
Goldman's capital headroom has shrunk to about 150 basis points while it buys back $4 billion of stock a quarter.
Goldman's capital cushion shrank quickly in 2026. The Standardized CET1 ratio fell from 14.3% at the end of 2025 to 12.9% in June 2026, on higher credit and market risk-weighted assets1. Against the 11.4% requirement, that leaves about 150 basis points of headroom2, near the top of the firm's 50 to 100 basis point management buffer but falling3.
Buybacks continued at pace. The firm bought back $4.00 billion of stock in the second quarter of 20264, and Standardized risk-weighted assets were $790,640 million5.
The fall was not steady. The Standardized CET1 ratio was 12.5% in March 2026 and 12.9% in June, as risk-weighted assets came down from $815 billion to $790 billion6. The biggest step came in the first quarter, straight after the year-end figure of 14.3%7.
The Advanced approach ratio sat higher, at 13.6% in June 20268, but the binding figure for requirements is the Standardized ratio. Common equity tier 1 capital itself was flat at $101.7 billion against $101.8 billion in March9.
The arithmetic is tight: a repeat of the last six months would take the ratio to about 11.5%10, inside the firm's own buffer. A September ratio under 12% with buybacks still at $4 billion a quarter would mean capital return was outrunning capital generation.
