The Revenue LinesNarrow moat

Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet

Goldman's revenue is seven-tenths trading and banking, and the consumer line that was meant to change that is closing.

Goldman reports three segments, and one of them does most of the work. In 2025 Global Banking & Markets earned net revenues of $41,453 million, Asset & Wealth Management $16,679 million and Platform Solutions $151 million1. The three add exactly to the firm's $58,283 million2.

Trading and banking dominate.

The segment chart in this app covers 2023 to 2025 only, on the basis restated in the fourth quarter of 2025. That restatement moved transaction banking from Platform Solutions into Global Banking & Markets, moved primary loan syndication into FICC financing, and spread the Urban Investment Group across all three segments3. Earlier years were reported on different definitions: 2024 Global Banking & Markets revenue was $34,943 million as first reported and $35,067 million restated45, so the older figures are not comparable.

The shares have moved. Global Banking & Markets was about 65% of net revenues in 2023 and about 71% in 20256; Asset & Wealth Management about 31% and 29%7. Platform Solutions fell to almost nothing.

Profit is more concentrated. Pre-tax earnings in 2025 were $17,574 million in Global Banking & Markets, $4,127 million in Asset & Wealth Management and $151 million in Platform Solutions8. The first earned about 80% of the total9.

The segments also differ in how much capital they use. Global Banking & Markets carried $79,748 million of average common equity in 2025, Asset & Wealth Management $24,666 million and Platform Solutions $4,312 million10. Segment assets at the end of 2025 were $1,582,670 million, $198,570 million and $28,080 million11. Trading and banking holds nearly nine-tenths of the balance sheet12, which is why its returns decide the firm's.

Region cuts across all three segments. In 2025 the Americas produced $36,548 million against $34,448 million in 2024, EMEA $14,155 million against $12,250 million and Asia $7,580 million against $6,814 million13. EMEA grew fastest that year, by about 16%14.

One ratio sums up the mix: the trading and banking share, about 71% in 202515. Above 75% for a full year, the steady half would be losing ground, not gaining it.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

GBM ~65% (2023) to ~71% (2025) of net revenues.
