Goldman Sachs (GS) — threat to the moat

Goldman won dozens of big trading clients and its flow revenue still just rose and fell with the market.

Share gains show up in financing, not in the flow business. Combined FICC and equities intermediation revenue ran $16.4 billion, $18.6 billion, $15.8 billion, $17.5 billion and $19.6 billion from 2021 to 2025, an average of $17.6 billion1. The best year was about a quarter above the worst2.

No trend, just the market.

That is a lot of client wins for a flat line. If Goldman moved from 77 to 123 top-three positions with the largest clients3 and intermediation still moved with markets, then the share gains mostly protected revenue in a pool that did not grow.

The same point shows in FICC. FICC intermediation was $9,318 million in 2023 and $10,271 million in 20254, a gain of about 10%5, against 50% for FICC financing over the same years.

The first half of 2026 fits the pattern. FICC intermediation was $6,325 million against $5,813 million a year earlier, up about 9%, while equities intermediation rose from $5,142 million to $6,875 million6. The equity desk rode the volatility; the bond desk barely moved.

None of this makes the flow business weak. It earned $19.6 billion in 20257 and it is what brings the financing clients in. It simply shows that the moat protects a share of a pool whose size the market sets.

Intermediation reached $19.6 billion in 20258. A year back near $16 billion with the client count intact would show the flow business simply following market activity.
