123 of the Top 150 ClientsWide moat
Goldman Sachs (GS) — moat facet
Goldman now sits in the top three for 123 of the 150 biggest trading clients, up from 77 in 2019, and that list is where the money is.
Trading franchises are built client by client, and Goldman's own count shows how far it has come. In the first half of 2025 it ranked in the top three with 123 of the top 150 FICC and equities clients, against 77 in 20191. It describes itself as a trusted adviser for more than 13,000 clients2.
The firm also measures its share of the fee pool against a named peer group: Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, UBS and, through 2022, Credit Suisse3. Against that group it reports gains of 350 basis points of wallet share in Global Banking & Markets since 20194.
Those two numbers explain much of the revenue. Global Banking & Markets net revenues rose from $29,994 million in 2023 to $41,453 million in 2025 on the restated basis5, about 38%6. The largest clients concentrate their trading with a few dealers, because a dealer that sees more of a client's flow can price it better and provide more financing against it.
Being in the top three matters more than being ranked at all. A client that splits its business among three dealers gives each a large share; a dealer ranked eighth gets scraps. The move from 77 to 123 is a move into the group that gets paid.
The firm frames the client count alongside its league tables. For 2025 Dealogic ranked it first in M&A and leveraged loans, second in high-yield debt and third in equity capital markets7. The same presentation reports more than 310 boomerang hires8, bankers who left and came back, which is another way of saying the platform keeps its people.
The firm's equities and FICC rankings rest on cumulative publicly disclosed net revenues from 2020 to the third quarter of 20259, not on any third-party survey. They measure what Goldman earned against what rivals reported.
These figures are the company's own, drawn from its own peer comparisons, and they come out once a year. Should the next count slip below 100, the biggest clients would be spreading their business again.
Top-three rank with 77 top clients (2019) to 123 (1H25).
The revenue the client ranking produces; a year-on-year decline in an active market would mean share was leaking.
