18A: Two Firsts at OnceNarrow moat

Intel (INTC) — moat facet

Intel's 18A was first to combine two new transistor technologies in volume, and so far Intel is almost its only customer.

Intel's technical claim for its factories rests on Intel 18A. The company says the process introduced two industry firsts in high-volume semiconductor manufacturing, gate-all-around transistors, which it calls RibbonFET, and backside power delivery, which it calls PowerVia1. It expects 18A to serve as the manufacturing process for multiple generations of its client and server processors2.

A working node, used mostly by its owner.

Being first matters less than being good at scale, and here the evidence is cost. Management said in July 2026 that it had cut the cost of its primary Panther Lake product, built on 18A, by roughly 50 percent year to date3. Falling unit cost is what better yields look like from outside.

The follow-on is under way. Intel 18A-P entered risk production in June 20264, and Intel is one of three companies, with TSMC and Samsung, investing in 2nm-class processes5.

The limit is that 18A so far makes Intel's own chips. Intel Foundry's revenue was $17,826 million in 2025, but only $307 million came from external customers6. A process that only its owner uses is a cost of making the owner's products, not yet a business.

The roadmap beyond 18A is set. Intel remains on track for Intel 14A risk production for internal products in the second half of 20277, and the 14A design kit reached version 0.5 with version 0.9 on track for October 20268. Intel describes itself as one of three companies, with TSMC and Samsung, investing in 2nm-class technology9.

The node is a real achievement with an unproven market. The measure that would prove it is the next quarter in which an outside company announces volume production on 18A or 18A-P.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Panther Lake cost cut about 50% in 2026; 18A-P entered risk production in June.

Outside customers on Intel's process; a step change would show the node competing for business rather than serving its owner.
