Client ComputingNarrow moat

Intel (INTC) — moat facet

Intel's PC chip business earned $9.3 billion in 2025 and has been losing share to AMD for years.

Client Computing is Intel's largest line and its most profitable. It sold $32,228 million in 2025, 61% of Intel's revenue12, and earned $9,317 million of operating income3, a margin of about 28.9%4. From the second quarter of 2026 it is called the Client Computing and Physical AI Group5.

Flat revenue, falling profit in 2025.

What is inside is processors for PCs: notebooks, desktops and the chipsets and other components around them. Client revenue from notebooks and desktops was $27.6 billion in 2025, down $1.1 billion, and other client revenue $4.6 billion, roughly flat6. The customers are PC makers; Intel's three largest customers, historically Dell, Lenovo and HP, accounted for 43% of total revenue in 202578.

The history is decline from a peak. On the older segment definitions Client Computing sold $40,057 million in 2020 and $40,511 million in 20219, when pandemic demand for laptops was at its height. On the current basis, which includes the network business moved in during 2025, the group sold $32,305 million in 2023, $33,346 million in 2024 and $32,228 million in 202510. The operating income was $10,128 million, $11,594 million and $9,317 million11.

How it is paid is by the chip. Intel sells processors at prices set by generation and tier, and in the second quarter of 2026 client average selling prices rose 27% while volume fell 8%12, because demand exceeded supply13. The mix is shifting: about two thirds of client revenue in that quarter came from AI PCs14, and chips made on the older Intel 7 process, almost half of 2025 product sales, are expected to decline significantly as a share in 202615.

Profitability is high by Intel's standards and falling in 2025. The 2025 margin of about 28.9% compares with about 34.8% in 202416. In the second quarter of 2026 the group earned $2,343 million on $8,877 million17, about 26.4%18.

Growth is the weakness. The segment has shrunk slightly over three years while AMD gained. Mercury Research estimated Intel at 69.7% of x86 client processors in the second quarter of 2026, and AMD at 30.3%19. Apple, Qualcomm and MediaTek sell Arm-based alternatives20.

The outlook depends on the AI PC cycle and on memory. Intel expected the client market to decline in 2026, impacted by rising memory prices21, so growth has to come from price and share rather than volume.

This line is a strong franchise in slow retreat. What would change the verdict is Intel's client share after supply catches up; a stabilisation near 70% would say the AI PC has halted AMD's gains, a fall toward 65% that it has not.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing
