⚠ Net Debt More Than Doubled in Six MonthsModerate threat
Intel (INTC) — threat to the moat
Buying back half of its Irish factory more than doubled Intel's net debt in six months.
Intel's balance sheet weakened in the first half of 2026. Short-term and long-term debt rose to $50,537 million at 27 June 2026 from $46,585 million at the end of 2025, while cash and short-term investments fell to $29,727 million from $37,416 million12. Net debt rose from about $9.2 billion to about $20.8 billion3.
The main cause was the $14.2 billion repurchase of Apollo's stake in the Irish factory4, financed partly with a $6.5 billion term loan that Intel repaid in April after issuing $6.5 billion of senior notes5.
Intel can carry this: equity was $87,542 million at 27 June 20266. But the capital plan is rising, the dividend is suspended and free cash flow is negative.
The borrowing was done at rising cost. The term loan used to buy out Apollo carried an interest rate of 4.79%7, and Intel repaid $1.5 billion and $1.0 billion of maturing notes in February and May 20268. It has been refinancing old, cheap debt with new, dearer debt while spending more on factories.
Net debt at the end of 2026 will answer the question. A figure above $25 billion would mean the factories are being built on borrowed money.
