⚠ Still Fifteen Points Below 2021Moderate threat

Intel (INTC) — threat to the moat

Even after a year of rising prices, Intel's gross margin is about fifteen points lower than in 2021.

Intel's gross margin recovery is real and incomplete. In 2021 gross profit was $43,815 million on revenue of $79,024 million1, a margin of about 55.4%2. In 2025 it was $18,375 million on $52,853 million, 34.8%3.

Gross profit fell by more than half from 2021.

The gap reflects the factories. Intel carries the cost of its own process development and depreciation, while rivals buy manufacturing from TSMC. Its foundry's operating loss, $10,318 million in 20254, is most of the difference.

Shortage pricing narrows the gap temporarily. A normal market will test whether Intel's own process is cost-competitive.

Cost of sales shows the burden. It was $35,756 million in 2024 and $34,478 million in 20255, on revenue of $53,101 million and $52,853 million. Two-thirds of every revenue dollar went to making the product, against less than half in 20216.

The margin in the first quarter after supply catches up is the one to read; below 38% would say the recovery depended on scarcity.
