Citigroup (C) — moat facet

Markets matches Services in revenue and earns about half its return on more capital.

Markets is as large as Services by revenue and earns far less on its capital. It made $22,409 million of revenue in 20251, about 26% of Citi's total2, and $6,192 million of net income3.

Up about 17% in four years, with one dip.

It has two parts. Fixed income earned $16,745 million, of which rates and currencies $11,749 million and spread products and other fixed income $4,996 million; equities earned $5,664 million4. The moat page on Markets and Banking covers the network behind the currency desk.

The money comes from the spread and commission on client trades, from financing clients' positions, and from the risk the desk holds between trades. The desk held $533 billion of average trading assets in 20255. It is international: $14,020 million of revenue came from outside North America and $8,389 million from inside6.

Revenue on the current basis was $19,108 million in 2021, $20,401 million in 2022, $18,888 million in 2023, $20,051 million in 2024 and $22,409 million in 20257, about 17% growth in four years8, with one down year. Net income was $6,654 million, $6,148 million, $4,059 million, $5,100 million and $6,192 million9.

Profitability is middling. The return on tangible equity was 14.8% in 2021, 11.1%, 7.1%, 9.0% and 11.6% in 2025, on $53.5 billion of allocated capital, the most of any segment10. The efficiency ratio was 63%11.

The latest quarter was strong: revenue of $7,007 million, up 17%, net income of $2,387 million, and a return of 17.0%12. Equities rose 45% and fixed income 7%13.

Costs rose with the good quarter. Markets operating expenses were $3.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 8%, on higher performance-related compensation and volume-related expenses14. Revenue rose 17%15, so the desk kept more of each dollar than a year earlier.

The desk has become more of a lender. Net interest income was $6,072 million of Markets revenue in 2021 and $9,687 million in 202516, from about 32% of the total to about 43%17, while principal transactions, the trading gains, fell from $9,693 million to $9,479 million18. Financing clients' positions earns a steadier spread than trading around them, and it ties the fund to the desk.

The quarters still swing. Markets revenue was $6,075 million in the first quarter of 2025 and $4,609 million in the fourth, when the return fell to 6.2% and the efficiency ratio rose to 78%19.

The first half of 2026 was stronger still. Markets revenue was $7,246 million in the first quarter and $7,007 million in the second20, about 18% more than the $12,055 million of the first half of 20252122.

Citi's plan is mid-single-digit revenue growth with a return of 11.5% to 13% in the near term and above 13% in the medium term23. That is a plan to earn a little over the cost of capital, which is what this business has done on average. A full year above 13% would be new; a year below 9% in normal markets would mean the capital should go elsewhere.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Revenue $19.1bn (2021) to $22.4bn (2025); RoTCE 11.6%.
