⚠ Growth Tied to Deposit SpreadsModerate threat
Citigroup (C) — threat to the moat
Citi's private bank grows when deposit spreads widen, which is a banker's income, not an adviser's.
The Private Bank's revenue depends on interest as much as on advice. Citi put its growth in the second quarter of 2026 down to higher deposit spreads and investment fee revenues1. Wealth at Work said the same, adding that lower mortgage spreads offset part of it2.
A spread-driven wealth business behaves like a bank. When rates fall, the deposit margin narrows and revenue falls with it, whatever the clients' wealth does.
The segment as a whole showed the pattern in the last cycle. Wealth net income was $1,710 million in 2021 and $153 million in 20223.
The Private Bank's own growth has been uneven. On the old basis its revenue rose 2% in 2024 and 12% in 20254, a pattern closer to interest rates than to steady asset gathering.
The latest quarter was stronger than the reported 5% suggests. The year-earlier quarter included a gain of about $80 million on the sale of an alternative investments fund platform5; without it, Private Bank revenue of $769 million was about 18% above the $731 million reported a year earlier67.
The first quarter of 2026 was up too: $757 million against $664 million a year earlier89, about 14%10.
Fee revenue is the test. If investment fees stopped growing in a year when rates fell, the Private Bank would be a deposit-gatherer for the rich rather than their adviser.
