Citigroup (C) — threat to the moat

Citi earns about two hundredths of a cent on each custody dollar, so price wars are what move this line.

The economics of custody are thin per dollar. Securities Services earned $5,990 million in 20251 on assets under custody or administration of $31.4 trillion at year end2, about 1.9 hundredths of a percent3. That revenue also includes the interest earned on client cash, so the fee alone is thinner still.

Assets under custody or administration ($ trillion)31.4Dec 202535Jun 2026Citigroup historical supplement; Q2 2026 earnings release
Assets held rise with markets.

At that rate, price is the whole contest. A large client re-tendering its mandate can ask for a cut worth tens of millions of dollars without the custodian losing any assets at all.

Assets held also rise with markets. Citi's own custody figure went from $31.4 trillion to $35 trillion in six months4, faster than the business grew revenue.

The latest quarter shows the gap. Assets under custody or administration were up 22% on a year earlier, at $35 trillion against $28 trillion5, while Securities Services revenue rose 16%6. Citi is holding more for proportionally less.

Over two years the trend ran the other way. Assets under custody or administration rose from $24.0 trillion in the first quarter of 2024 to $31.4 trillion at the end of 2025, about 31%, while quarterly Securities Services revenue rose from $1,271 million to $1,787 million, about 41%78. The price per dollar held has fallen in one year, not in several.

The ratio of revenue to assets held is the gauge. Falling for several years while assets rose, it would mean Citi was holding more for less.
