Citigold and 655 BranchesNarrow moat
Citigroup (C) — moat facet
Citi's 655 branches are now a wealth business, and their clients stay for a decade.
The largest part of Wealth is the part that used to be the retail bank. Citigold and Retail Banking earned $7,666 million of the segment's $11,272 million revenue in 20251, about 68%2. Citi moved Retail Banking from U.S. Personal Banking into Wealth in 20263. It had 655 U.S. retail branches at the end of 20254.
The clients stay. About 65% of Wealth's U.S. Citigold clients have been with Citi for more than 10 years5. Citigold provides financial services to affluent and high net worth clients6, and the branches feed it.
The branch network earns mostly on deposits. In the second quarter of 2026 Citigold and Retail Banking revenue was $2,181 million, up 17%, driven by higher deposit spreads and higher investment fee revenues7.
On the old basis, before the retail bank joined, Citigold alone earned $3,803 million in 2023 and $4,953 million in 20258, about 30% growth in two years9.
The revenue has risen quarter after quarter. Citigold and Retail Banking earned $1,502 million in the first quarter of 2024 and $2,010 million in the fourth quarter of 2025, about 34% more1011, and $2,181 million in the second quarter of 202612.
Citi's plan for the branches is to make them feed the wealth business. Its Investor Day priorities for Wealth included "Transform the Retail Bank" and a "Retail platform to support deepening with U.S. Citigold clients"13.
The line is now about 69% of Wealth revenue, $2,181 million of $3,177 million in the second quarter of 20261415. The branch count has edged up, from 645 in the first quarter of 2024 to 655 at the end of 202516.
In the second quarter of 2026 Citigold and Retail Banking revenue rose 17%, "driven by higher deposit spreads and higher investment fee revenues"17.
The combination only works if the deposits turn into investments. Investment fee revenue growing slower than deposit revenue for two years would mean the branches were acting as a retail bank and not as a wealth business.
Citigold and Retail Banking $2.2bn in Q2 2026, up 17%.
The largest part of Wealth; revenue growing only on deposit spreads would mean the branches were a bank, not a wealth business.
