⚠ Institutional Money Moves in a DayModerate threat
Citigroup (C) — threat to the moat
Citi's deposits fell two years running after 2022, and most of them are institutional money that can move quickly.
The same deposits that make Services valuable can leave faster than a household's. Citi's year-end deposits were $1,365,954 million in 2022 and $1,308,681 million in 20231, a fall of about 4%2. They fell again to $1,284,458 million in 20243 before recovering.
Most of Citi's deposits are institutional4, and an institutional treasurer watches the bank's credit rating as closely as its price. The operating balances needed to run payroll stay; the surplus cash does not.
Citi keeps a large buffer against this. Its Investor Day put available liquidity resources at about $1.0 trillion5.
The buffer is built for this. Citi's Investor Day reported $607 billion of high-quality liquid assets and a liquidity coverage ratio of 115%6.
Money that arrives quickly can leave the same way. End-of-period deposits were $1,493 billion in June 20267, about 6% more than six months earlier8.
The deposit base is concentrated in the business most exposed to this. Services held average deposits of $1,017 billion in the second quarter of 2026, against $1,504 billion for all of Citi910, about 68%11.
The inflow is recent. Average Services deposits rose from $961 billion in the first quarter of 2026 to $1,017 billion in the second12, about 6% in three months13.
The test comes only in stress. A quarter in which Services deposits fell faster than the rest of the industry's would show how much of the balance was operational and how much was simply parked.
