EnergyNarrow moat

Mitsui & Co. (8031) — moat facet

Mitsui's energy profit has fallen by two-fifths in two years and is planned to recover with prices, not volume.

Energy earned ¥281.7 billion in the year to March 2024, ¥173.5 billion in 2025 and ¥164.2 billion in 202612. Its revenue was ¥3,230.7 billion3, much of it trading, and its assets ¥4,181.4 billion, a return of 3.9%45.

A two-year fall and a planned rebound.

The segment's profit comes from dividends on older LNG projects, ¥69.2 billion from Sakhalin II, Abu Dhabi, Oman and Qatar6; equity-method profit from the US LNG and gas businesses, including ¥24.0 billion from the Cameron holding company and ¥36.4 billion from Mitsui E&P USA7; and oil and gas production of 211 thousand barrels of oil equivalent a day8. The company estimates its LNG business earned about ¥135 billion9.

It also holds Mitsui's Russian positions and the Mozambique project, whose exposure is ¥309.8 billion10.

From April 2026 power moved out of the segment; restated, the latest year's profit is ¥157.8 billion. The plan for the current year is ¥200.0 billion11, and the first quarter earned ¥34.4 billion against ¥20.2 billion12.

The measure is the ¥200.0 billion plan. It assumes a consolidated oil price of $80 a barrel against $78 in the latest year13; the segment's recovery depends more on price than on new volume until Mozambique starts in 2029.
