Mitsui & Co. (8031) — threat to the moat

Mitsui's reported profit rises and falls with the gains from what it sells.

Mitsui's profit fell 7.4% in the latest year, and the company attributes part of the decline to the absence of gains from selling stakes in Paiton and VLI in the year before1. Recycling produces profits that are real but do not recur.

About a fifth of a record quarter.

In the first quarter of the current year the same thing flattered the other direction. The CIM Group restructuring contributed ¥44.2 billion and the listing of Quantinuum, a quantum computing company, ¥10.2 billion2. Together they were about a fifth of the quarter's net profit3.

For an investor, one-off gains are part of the business model. For a shareholder trying to judge the steady earnings, they obscure it.

The measure is profit excluding one-off items. Mitsui reports a base profit enhancement of ¥52 billion in the latest year4; growth in that figure matters more than the headline.
