Mitsui & Co. (8031) — threat to the moat
In BHP's venture Mitsui owns less than a rival trading house does.
At 7%, Mitsui is a passenger in BHP's venture. The operator's decisions on Ministers North, where it holds 85%1, will set Mitsui's volumes for decades.
The venture also includes ITOCHU at 8%2, a rival trading house that sells into the same Asian markets. Neither Japanese partner can shape the project much.
The advantage of such a stake is low cost and low effort; its weakness is that Mitsui cannot accelerate growth when prices are high or slow spending when they are low.
A small stake also has an exit problem. Mitsui cannot sell 7% of a BHP venture as easily as it can sell a listed share, and the value of the stake depends on the operator's long-term mine plan. The three stakes together produce similar tonnages, 20.8, 20.6 and 22.5 million tonnes3, from very different ownership levels, which is why the smallest ones are the most exposed to decisions taken elsewhere.
The measure is the delivery of Ministers North to schedule. First ore in the second half of 20284 is the date; a delay would push back the only growth in this stake.
